About Suspension Complete Systems

The Saab complete suspension system is designed to protect the vehicle’s body from the vibrations and shocks of the road when driving. Suspension systems vary from vehicle to vehicle but can consist of coil and leaf springs, axles, shock absorbers, ball joints, arms and rods and connect the chassis to the wheels. When driving, the suspension ensures that the vehicle’s wheels are kept firmly on the ground with no sideways or upwards movement.

The suspension system receives the pressure from bumps in the road up through the springs that are attached to the wheel. Anti-roll bars are fitted to the front suspension and are used to stop the vehicle rolling. These twist upward when they feel the road vibrations in order to minimise shock.

There are also control arms which are connected to the vehicle using bushes. Their job is to keep the tyres on the ground and prevent tyre hop. Other parts also form part of the suspension.

Failure of part of the suspension system would be indicated by a less comfortable ride as shocks would vibrate through the vehicle and be felt by passengers. Other issues can include uneven tyre wear or tyres rising from the road.

Saab trivia

  • Saab was the first car manufacturer to install heated driver's seats. That's because one of the Saab executives suffered from a bad back that was particularly painful on cold mornings.
  • The Saab concept car, the EV-1, was unveiled in 1985 and had a few cool features. One was the addition of solar cells to the roof (to power a ventilation fan) and self-repairing bumpers.
  • The Saab 900 was built between 1978 and 1993 and is the best selling Saab ever. In that time, it sold a total of 980,817 cars, around half of which were the convertible model. They can still be seen on UK roads very regularly.
  • The Saab 92 was the first production car to put the petrol tank in between the rear wheels. They did this to improve driver safety, and it helped with balance too.
  • When it comes to accessories, it's hard to beat the Toppola Camper, which turns a Saab 99 and Saab 900 into a sort of campervan. The Toppola comes with a cooker, double bed, and heater, and is attached to the Saab by removing the rear door.
