Nissan brake shoes are a part of the drum braking system. The wheel bolts to the drum, inside the drum there are two metal shoes lined with heat resistant material, when the brakes are applied the lining is pushed, hydraulically, against the smooth inside edge of the drum, consequently slowing the rotation of the wheels.
Some car makes and models have disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. More commonly on modern vehicles disc brakes are fitted on all four wheels.
