About Bonnet Gas Strutss

The bonnet is a crucial part of the car body, for beneath it is housed some of the most important components a car needs in order to run. In most cars the bonnet is the hinged cover that protects and allows access to the engine compartment. A bonnet is made up of an outer panel which is designed to be smooth and streamlined, assisting with the aerodynamics of the vehicle, contoured to match the shape of the car, and an inner panel which is strong and offers protection to the engine beneath.

The bonnet is fixed to the frame at the front of the car and, usually works with a latch mechanism and, with the action of hinges, opens outwards. The Vauxhall bonnet gas strut is a rod which forms part of the framework of the bonnet and is used to hold the bonnet up and in place when it is open. The Vauxhall gas struts are positioned on either side of the bonnet so that the bonnet is held in place evenly.

The Vauxhall bonnet gas struts use a gas spring mechanism to work, which uses gas inside a cylinder, compressed by a piston, to apply force, which keeps the strut rigid and extended and able to support the weight of the bonnet while it is open.

Loss of gas is the usual cause of failure in the Vauxhall bonnet gas strut. Damage can occur to the seal, enabling gas to leak out every time the bonnet is open, i.e. every time the bonnet gas strut opens and shuts. A faulty or broken Vauxhall bonnet gas strut may mean that the bonnet is hard to open, won't stay open fully or just slams shut again. When replacing the bonnet gas struts on your vehicle, buying new Vauxhall bonnet gas struts will ensure a perfect fit with the Vauxhall bonnet and compatibility with the make and model of your car.

Vauxhall trivia

  • There’s a Vauxhall for everyone. They currently produce 21 different cars in three different ranges: the passenger car, the commercial car, and four different high-performance VXR models.
  • The Vauxhall flagship vehicle is the Vauxhall Insignia. The family car has been in production since 2008 and was designed to replace the Vectra and the Signum. In the US, the Insignia is known by the rather grandiose name ‘Buick Regal’.
  • They might be famous for their cars, but Vauxhall also has the claim to fame of being in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest GPS drawing! The 6080-mile Halloween art made national news!
  • The Vectra C is a very popular car, especially among the police force, and it's now common to see car buyers desperate to pick up an ex-police Vectra for cheap. It is estimated that Vauxhall manufactures as much as 70% of the UK police forces cars.
  • If you're looking for a real bargain, you can't go wrong with the Vauxhall Viva. This small hatchback is the cheapest model that Vauxhall makes!
