About Amps

The Vauxhall amp (or amplifier for its full title), is a key part in a vehicle’s sound system and as the name suggests, it’s job is to amplify low level audio signals so that they can be used by the speakers to generate sound.

There are two types of amplifier and their quality differs considerably. The first type is a basic factory amplifier which is built in to the car audio head unit, which is used to power a small number of speakers. The other is called an outboard amplifier. This Vauxhall amp is separate to the car audio head unit and is capable of providing a much better sound and power more speakers than the head unit amplifier.

Signs that the Vauxhall amp is faulty would result in either no sound or poor sound quality. This could include hissing, cracking or background noise coming through the speakers. This could be a wiring issue, or could be something more specific to the amp. Other damage to the Vauxhall amp can be caused by the amp overheating. This can be rectified by increasing the airflow to the Vauxhall amp. An unblocked fan should always be present.

Vauxhall trivia

  • If you thought you were seeing mostly grey Vauxhalls on the road, your eyes aren't going funny. It's the most popular colour for Vauxhall cars.
  • The Vauxhall flagship vehicle is the Vauxhall Insignia. The family car has been in production since 2008 and was designed to replace the Vectra and the Signum. In the US, the Insignia is known by the rather grandiose name ‘Buick Regal’.
  • The Vectra C is a very popular car, especially among the police force, and it's now common to see car buyers desperate to pick up an ex-police Vectra for cheap. It is estimated that Vauxhall manufactures as much as 70% of the UK police forces cars.
  • The colour yellow that Vauxhall uses on its cars is named 'Maddox Yellow,' after pensioner Richard Maddox had his Corsa vandalised. Residents of the small village of Arlington where Maddox lived thought the car and the colour were ugly!
  • If you're looking for a real bargain, you can't go wrong with the Vauxhall Viva. This small hatchback is the cheapest model that Vauxhall makes!
