About Bonnet Gas Strutss

The bonnet is a crucial part of the car body, for beneath it is housed some of the most important components a car needs in order to run. In most cars the bonnet is the hinged cover that protects and allows access to the engine compartment. A bonnet is made up of an outer panel which is designed to be smooth and streamlined, assisting with the aerodynamics of the vehicle, contoured to match the shape of the car, and an inner panel which is strong and offers protection to the engine beneath.

The bonnet is fixed to the frame at the front of the car and, usually works with a latch mechanism and, with the action of hinges, opens outwards. The MINI bonnet gas strut is a rod which forms part of the framework of the bonnet and is used to hold the bonnet up and in place when it is open. The MINI gas struts are positioned on either side of the bonnet so that the bonnet is held in place evenly.

The MINI bonnet gas struts use a gas spring mechanism to work, which uses gas inside a cylinder, compressed by a piston, to apply force, which keeps the strut rigid and extended and able to support the weight of the bonnet while it is open.

Loss of gas is the usual cause of failure in the MINI bonnet gas strut. Damage can occur to the seal, enabling gas to leak out every time the bonnet is open, i.e. every time the bonnet gas strut opens and shuts. A faulty or broken MINI bonnet gas strut may mean that the bonnet is hard to open, won't stay open fully or just slams shut again. When replacing the bonnet gas struts on your vehicle, buying new MINI bonnet gas struts will ensure a perfect fit with the MINI bonnet and compatibility with the make and model of your car.

MINI trivia

  • It can be hard to keep track of all of the different companies that have owned MINI throughout its long history. At the moment, the name is owned by BMW, and MINI has its own independent division.
  • Where you'd expect to see a radio or speaker system in a Mini, was actually an ashtray in early models. The designer of the first Mini was a heavy smoker who believed that listening to the radio was more of a distraction than lighting a cigarette.
  • MINI export their cars to 110 different countries. The most popular markets are the US, Germany, and China. The UK is only the second biggest market for MINI.
  • Consistently voted the most popular British car of all time, there are almost 500 specialist car clubs dedicated to the various makes and models of Mini. And that's just in Britain. Globally, there are an additional 260 clubs all celebrating the Mini make.
  • Over the last 41 years, five and a half million Minis have been produced by MINI.
