About Steering Racks

One of the most popular steering systems in modern motor vehicles is the rack and pinion system. The Jaguarsteering rack forms one part of the mechanics of this system. One of the reasons for the system’s popularity is undoubtedly its simplicity. In a typical non-powered steering system a set of rack and pinion gears is enclosed in a metal tube. Each end of the rack protrudes from the ends of the tube. Each end of the Jaguarsteering rack is connected to a rod, known as a tie rod. The pinion is connected to the steering shaft and when the steering wheel is turned it causes the pinion gear to spin, which moves the Jaguarsteering rack transversely. The tie rods on either side of the rack connect to spindles on the car wheels. The transverse movement of the rack thereby causes the wheels to turn right and left according to the direction in which the vehicle is being steered.

In a power steering system the design of the Jaguarsteering rack has one or two variations. A section of the rack is connected to a cylinder with a piston in the centre, which has a fluid port on either side. Hydraulic fluid is provided to either side of the piston, which causes the Jaguarsteering rack to move, producing the power assisted steering.

Jaguar trivia

  • Jaguar isn't a big name in F1, but they did have a go. They raced between 2000 and 2004 but didn't perform well enough to justify the costs. They managed a less than stellar ninth place in their final race.
  • The 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most gruelling and famous race events in the world, has been won by Jaguar an astonishing seven times. Their first victory was back in 1951.
  • The 2014 Superbowl advert for Jaguar featured Brit actors Ben Kingsley and Mark Strong, with a terrified Tom Hiddlestone hanging out of a helicopter as it flew across London. Not many people know that the driver used for this advert was The Stig (Ben Collins).
  • The iconic Jaguar ornament on the bonnet isn't included as standard anymore. Lots of people seem to think it's illegal, but they're not, as long as the ornament is spring-loaded. The jaguar ornament is known in-house as The Leaper, and you can still buy the Leaper as an after-purchase accessory.
  • The Jaguar XJ has that luxurious leather interior, but did you know that all of that leather comes very specifically from Scottish Angus Bulls? Bulls don't get stretch marks, and they don't get bitten much by mosquitoes either. Belly and neck skin becomes the dash and door finish, while the backbone and the rump are used for the seats.
