About Gear Sticks

The Chevrolet gear stick is a metal lever that attaches to the gearbox in a manual vehicle. It is usually located between the front passenger and driver seat and is on the left hand side of the driver in a UK standard vehicle and is used by the driver to change gears whilst driving. Some vehicles, particularly those in the United States, have gear sticks that are attached to the steering column.

To operate the Chevrolet gear stick, the driver should depress the clutch pedal. This disengages the engine and enables the vehicle to change gears.

On top of the Chevrolet gear stick is a gear knob, which has a diagram of the positions of the gears on the top of it for the driver’s convenience. For the driver to change gears he/she has to move the Chevrolet gear stick in the relevant directions shown by the diagram. They will feel the gear engaging when the Chevrolet gear stick pushes in to place.

Some 4 x 4s use a second Chevrolet gear stick which engages another gearbox for off-road terrain.

Problems with the Chevrolet gear stick may result in an inability to change gears.

Chevrolet trivia

  • The founder of Chevrolet held the speed world record before he built the Chevrolet Motor Car Company.
  • Chevrolet holds the number one and number three positions on the list of America's most popular cars. Although Ford's Mustang is in second place, the Corvette is the number one car in the US, with the Camaro at number three.
  • There's a version of the Corvette that is very different from its counterparts. The Corvette Grand Sport is much lighter than traditional designs, but the car was built at a time when General Motors were stopping projects. Only five of the cars were made, and the hefty price tag of £6-8 million means that they are all in the hands of private collectors.
  • When it comes to stock car racing, it's hard to beat Chevrolet. As of 2015, they became the most successful manufacturer in the history of NASCAR, with 749 race wins and a staggering 38 manufacturer's championships.
  • The Camaro is one of the most recognised cars in the world, but it wasn't always called the Camaro. It was originally called The Panther, but Chevrolet wanted to go for a more family-friendly vibe.
