About Warning Triangles

The BMW warning triangle is an essential bit of safety equipment for all drivers and should ideally be kept as part of a larger breakdown kit. The BMW warning triangle is used if a vehicle breaks down and is particularly useful should you break down in the dark as it’s reflective so keeps you visible and alerts other drivers of your presence at the roadside.

There is no legal requirement to carry a BMW warning triangle whilst driving in the UK, but it is a legal necessity in various parts of Europe including Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland, Austria and Ireland. In Spain, it is a legal requirement to carry two warning triangles whilst driving (check local driving rules).

If you do use one when you break down in the UK, you should remember that you should never place a BMW warning triangle on a motorway as it’s dangerous to do so. You should also be aware that when placing a BMW warning triangle you need to position it 45 metres (147ft) behind your broken down vehicle on the same side of the road to give other drivers plenty of time to notice you.

BMW trivia

  • The BMW 3.0CSL was sold in the 70s and had the unusual addition of a spoiler that was kept in the boot. The owner could install it if they wanted to, but BMW couldn't sell the car with the spoiler attached because of road laws!
  • The BMW M1 has a classic look, so it's no surprise that its designer also came up with some other amazing car designs. Giorgetto Giugiaro is also responsible for the DeLorean, the Beretta U22 Neos handgun, and the Nikon D4 camera! Although, he also designed the Yugo, commonly called the worst car that's ever been made.
  • One of the reasons older BMWs keep their value is because it's easy to get spare parts for even the oldest models. That's because BMW has carried on making car parts, even for cars that were built in WWII.
  • The famous German pilot, the Red Baron, called BMW engines the 'greatest in the world' and ‘the best engine in the war’.
  • Think you know what BMW is an acronym of? If you answered Broke My Wallet, you’re definitely wrong. It really stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (which is Bavarian Motor Works in English).
