The new eighth generation Volkswagen Passat is set to go on sale before the end of 2014. This new version is a lot more upmarket than previous generations and is set to have Volkswagen competing with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. The new Passat has a much sleeker design, with a more high quality and spacious interior. The engines are also much improved and will enable the Passat to move from competing with the likes of the Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Insignia up to the more upmarket Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3-Series. The vehicle is set to go sale on 7 October with a starting price of £22,000. Deliveries of the vehicle will start in January 2015. It will initially be available in Saloon and Estate variants with the Alltrack and CC versions coming later in 2015. It is built on the highly flexible Volkswagen MQB platform, which is also used on the latest version of the Golf. The best engine in the new range is the 2.0L TDI which gives 69mpg and 108g/km CO2 emissions. This is what Martin Winterkorn the Volkswagen Chairman had to say about the new Passat: “It is designed to be a premium car without premium cost and it is designed to be eye-catching without envy. The new Passat also offers more value for money, because it transfers technologies and features into the mid-range segment, which are normally limited to up-market cars.” What do you think of the new VW Passat? Do you think it can compete with the likes of the BMW 3-Series or Mercedes C-Class? Share your thoughts in our comments box below.
