About Headlamp Motors

The Volvo headlamp motor is an electronic device which is an essential part of your vehicle’s lighting system. It works in conjunction with the headlight levelling sensor to position the car headlights in the optimum position for driving, whilst ensuring that oncoming traffic is not affected by the strong beam of the vehicle headlights.

The Volvo headlamp motor is controlled by a cam-operated switch which is dedicated to each headlight and an in-vehicle switch that is situated on the dashboard. The Volvo headlamp motor consists of a series of relays and motors and works by receiving a current from the 12-volt ignition which generates enough power to position the headlights where they need to be as dictated by the headlight levelling sensor.

Damage to the Volvo headlamp motor can be indicated by the headlights not moving up and down or side-to-side when the headlights are used. Damage can be caused by electrical faults, corrosion or jammed gears in the motor.

Because of the positioning of the motor it is possible that dirt and water can get in to the motor which can cause many issues with the motor. It is recommended that issues with the headlight motor are fixed urgently.

Volvo trivia

  • The Volvo XC90 has won an incredible 70 awards, ranging from the Auto Express Car of the Year 2015, the Business Insider 2015 Car of the Year, the Sunday Times Top 100 Cars 2016, and the Motor Trend SUV of the Year 2016, to name just a few.
  • Volvo is Swedish and was founded in 1924 by two brothers who designed and built the ÖV 4 because they realised that other cars couldn't cope with Sweden's harsh weather. The car was given the name 'Jakob' and had both a 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine and a three-speed manual gearbox.
  • During the 1950s, Volvo was doing so well that they started offering five-years worth of insurance with every car sale. It wasn't a long-lived campaign.
  • Volvo invented the lambda sond, which is a probe that senses oxygen. It is responsible for cutting down exhaust emissions by 90%, and has been called "the most significant breakthrough ever made in the control of vehicle exhaust emissions." Volvo waived the patent rights on this, and now almost every car on the planet has one installed.
  • Although many of their inventions were released to the public, Volvo has been responsible for so many cutting-edge inventions in car manufacturing that they have had to build an entire company division to deal solely with patent infringement.
