About Ignition Switchs

The Toyota ignition switch is situated inside the vehicle, usually on the steering column or dashboard. It can be key-activated with a barrel lock mechanism, but some vehicles use a keyless ignition system that is operated by pressing a button on a key fob.

The Toyota ignition switch activates all of the main electrical systems in the vehicle including the radio, lights and windows. It ignites the fuel and air combination of the combustion engine and allows the starter motor to operate. The battery is also engaged once the ignition switch is turned.

If the Toyota ignition switch is not working, you will not be able to start the vehicle without bypassing the ignition switch, as it locks when not in use. To bypass the ignition switch, the wiring will have to be disconnected and manipulated directly, behind a panel in the steering column - otherwise known as hotwiring.

It is also possible that the switch will operate, but will not turn when the key is inserted. This could be caused by a worn key or the steering column binding. In the case of the latter, this is sometimes solved by wiggling the steering wheel back and forth.

Toyota trivia

  • The first car company to produce over 10 million cars in a single year (which they did in 2013), Toyota also boasts the record-breaking sales of one Corolla sold every 37 seconds (every 27 seconds in 2013). That made the Corolla the best selling car of all time!
  • The Toyota Prius is just the latest example of why Toyota is widely considered the greenest company in the car industry. Consistent efforts at improving sustainability and eco-awareness led to them getting voted the number one Global Green Brand back in 2015.
  • That founder's name was Toyoda, but the name of the company was changed to Toyota because it took one less stroke to write in Japanese. Eight is a lucky number in Japan, and Toyota takes eight strokes to write, and so Toyota it is!
  • Without the US, Toyota very likely wouldn't exist today as we know it. In 1950, the car company was struggling to fight off bankruptcy and only managed to make 300 trucks until the Korean War kicked off. The US then put in an order for 5,000 vehicles, transforming the company and its future.
  • As well as the best selling car of all time, Toyota is also responsible for the longest-running production on a car model ever. The Toyota model Land Cruiser started production in 1951, and as of 2019 has sold over 10 million units!
