About Power Steering Boxs
Power steering, also known as power assisted steering, makes steering a motor vehicle easier for the driver by reducing the amount of force that is required to be applied to the steering wheel when trying to manoeuvre the car and almost every vehicle that is built nowadays has some form of power steering system.
Although electric power assisted steering is rising in popularity, by far the most prevalent system at present is hydraulic power.
Hydraulic steering employs a pump, which is normally driven by a belt. The pump generates pressure and the driver’s control is provided by either a rack and pinion or a Saabpower steering box. Whichever of the two systems is used, the basic operation is the same. The fluid pressure generated by the pump is used to push against a piston. When the steering wheel is turned, pressure flows to one side, causing the piston, which is attached to the steering gears, to move. The driver is thereby able to allow hydraulic pressure to do most of the work involved in turning the steering wheel.
Although the rack and pinion system is felt to provide lighter weight and greater control precision, the Saab power steering box is considered to be harder wearing and possess greater durability.
Saab trivia
- The Saab 900 was built between 1978 and 1993 and is the best selling Saab ever. In that time, it sold a total of 980,817 cars, around half of which were the convertible model. They can still be seen on UK roads very regularly.
- The Saab concept car, the EV-1, was unveiled in 1985 and had a few cool features. One was the addition of solar cells to the roof (to power a ventilation fan) and self-repairing bumpers.
- Saab was the first car manufacturer to install heated driver's seats. That's because one of the Saab executives suffered from a bad back that was particularly painful on cold mornings.
- What does the word 'Saab' even mean? It's actually an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, Swedish Aircraft Company Limited. Saab is much easier to say.
- The character of Jerry Seinfeld drove a classic Saab 900 convertible. It wasn't shown much onscreen, but viewers did see him sell it and buy a newer Saab.
