About Coil Packs

The Hyundai coil pack is an essential part of the ignition of a vehicle. It consists of several coils in one fitting. Each coils role is to transfer the power from the vehicles 12volt battery in to a much higher voltage of thousands of volts to create the spark in spark plugs. They are then told when to fire by an on-board computer. These coils have some form of resistor in them, which limits the amount of power transmitted to the coils from the 12volt battery. This resistor can be an internal or external resistor or consist of a resistor wire. One coil pack is used for either one or two engine cylinders.

The downside of a Hyundai coil pack is that if one of the individual coils in the pack goes, the whole pack needs to be replaced. Just one damaged coil can cause its adjoined engine cylinder to misfire. This may show on the dashboard as a ‘check engine’ light. Damage can be caused by worn spark plugs, which make the Hyundai coil pack work harder to compensate, or faulty wiring or components. Hyundai coil packs can also simply wear out through repeated use.

Hyundai trivia

  • Hit zombie show, The Walking Dead has been sponsored by Hyundai since it started, and in 2014 they released a special edition tie-in vehicle. They did have some conditions for their cars being used in the show, though. Bloodstains aren’t allowed to be seen on a Hyundai, and they aren’t allowed to be used to directly run over the living dead.
  • Hyundai were the first car manufacturer to offer a ten-year warranty on their vehicle. They did this in the early 1990s!
  • Hyundai has a major advantage over other car manufacturers who have to import the steel that they use. Instead, Hyundai can cut production costs because they roll their own steel in South Korea.
  • An estimated 90% of Hyundai sales come from their European market. That might be partly due to their sponsorship of events like FIFA.
  • When Hyundai entered a deal with Marvel, it meant that three different Hyundai cars were used in Ant-Man and the Wasp. As part of the promotion, Hyundai also designed and built the Kona Iron Man Edition SUV, which is pretty cool!
