Volvo S40 Overview

The Volvo S40 is classed as a compact executive car and is manufactured by the Swedish automobile company: Volvo Car Corporation. Volvo cars are renowned for their safety, and how well built they are. The ‘S’ in the S40 is for the saloon version and the estate version is called the V40, with the ‘V’ meaning versatility/estate. This range of Volvo is safe and a comfortable ride with a stylish interior although it is not as good to drive as some of its competitors.

Volvo S40 History

The first generation (1995-2004) S40/V40 was originally intended to be called the S4/F4 but Audi had already claimed that name so they went with S40/V40 instead. It was designed in conjunction with Mitsubishi Motors and designed on the Mitsubishi Carisma platform. In 2000 this model went under a bit of makeover, mainly to the mechanical parts but also to the exterior. There were upgrades for several mechanical parts, including: suspension and steering and the headlights and other lights were the main exterior changes to take place. The second generation (2004-12) had a change in design. It was now based on the Volvo P1 platform and was also nominated for world car of the year in 2005. This version was mainly Volvo parts but also had some similar parts to the Ford Focus and Mazda3. In 2008 the S40 had a slight makeover, giving it more storage space, improvements to the lights with some added safety features.
