Daewoo Matiz Overview

The Daewoo Matiz comes under the class of City Cars. It is an extremely small car produced by the South Korean manufacturer GM Korea. It has also been know as the Chevrolet Spark and was first brought into production to replace the Daewoo Tico. All generations of the car have been 5-door hatchbacks and is actually pretty spacious for its size. It is designed well, cheap to buy and run but does lack power when driving on motorway.

Daewoo Matiz History

The first generation M100 (1998-2001) was based on a Fiat Cinquecento design that was rejected by Fiat and the 0.8L engine from the Daewoo Tico that this model replaced was carried over into this vehicle. This was to become the most popular selling Daewoo in Europe over the next few years. It received a makeover in 2000 with the new M150 (2000 -2005 ) design, a new front end and a new 1.0L engine. The second generation M200 (2005-09) received major modifications with the upper body being redesigned improving fuel economy and the interior receiving a total change in design. Important parts of the suspension and other parts were changed on this model. In some parts of Europe it was sold as the Chevrolet Matiz or Spark. The third generation M300 (2009 - present) was based on the Chevrolet Beat concept car which has a very modern design and was aimed at the younger aged group of urban drivers. It was seen to be good fun to drive, very economical and value for money. This version was marketed as the Chevrolet Spark in Europe and most other markets.

Fuel Economy

This car is very economical in class with its 0.8. 1.0 and 1.2 engines in both petrol and diesel. The second generation model came under the lowest tax brand in the UK and free London congestion charges due to its low emissions. You would be hard pressed to find a more economical car on the market.
