About Speedometers

A vehicle’s Peugeot speedometer is a gauge or meter that measures the speed of a motor vehicle. Is does this by measuring the speed at which the wheels are rotating and communicating this to the Peugeot speedometer head, which then displays this as the vehicle’s speed.

There are two principal means by which the Peugeot speedometer system communicates the necessary information to the Peugeot speedometer head. The first of these is by way of a speedometer cable. This is a lengthy, flexible cable that comprises a collection of wires connected to the drive shaft, which turns as the wheels do. The rotation of the drive shaft causes the cable to turn which causes a magnet within a cup inside the speedometer head to turn. This causes currents that produce motion which, in turn, causes the Peugeot speedometer dial to move and demonstrate the vehicle’s speed.

The second means of transmitting information to the Peugeot speedometer head is electronically, by means of a Peugeot speedometer transducer. The Peugeot speedometer transducer is normally attached to the vehicle’s transmission and is an electronic pulse generator. It sends signals to the car’s computer as to how quickly the wheels are turning and this information is translated by the computer into the speed that is displayed by the Peugeot speedometer.

In either type of Peugeot speedometer system there are various components that are susceptible to failure but, fortunately, all of these are easily replaced.

Peugeot trivia

  • In 1913, one of Peugeot's motorsports team, Jules Goux, not only won the Indianapolis 500 but also broke the World Speed Record. He was the first European to win the Indy 500, and the 7.6-litre car was dubbed the fastest vehicle of the time.
  • All models of Peugeot have a number designation with a 0 in the middle. There's a persistent myth that this is because the designers wanted to integrate the starting handle, and chose the central 0 as the ideal way to hide the slot. There's no substance to that myth, but those numbers are an indication of the size and age of the car.
  • Peugeot might not be a name in Formula 1 (they did try a few times, but it never quite worked out), but they have been dominant in other races. In particular, four victories in an incredible 24 hours at Le Mans, and six impressive wins in the Dakar rally, to name just a few.
  • Peugeots have been seen on the big and small screen. Most notable, the Peugeot 403 convertible was the car of everyone's famous scruffy detective Colombo. There was also an episode of Absolutely Fabulous where Edina and Patsy drive through France in a 205.
  • Lots of car manufacturers tried building electric vehicles at some point, but Peugeot had more success than others in the 1940s! Fuel restrictions promoted the design, and the car came with four 12-volt batteries that meant a range of 80km on a single charge and a top speed of 32km/h.
