About Steering Racks

One of the most popular steering systems in modern motor vehicles is the rack and pinion system. The Kiasteering rack forms one part of the mechanics of this system. One of the reasons for the system’s popularity is undoubtedly its simplicity. In a typical non-powered steering system a set of rack and pinion gears is enclosed in a metal tube. Each end of the rack protrudes from the ends of the tube. Each end of the Kiasteering rack is connected to a rod, known as a tie rod. The pinion is connected to the steering shaft and when the steering wheel is turned it causes the pinion gear to spin, which moves the Kiasteering rack transversely. The tie rods on either side of the rack connect to spindles on the car wheels. The transverse movement of the rack thereby causes the wheels to turn right and left according to the direction in which the vehicle is being steered.

In a power steering system the design of the Kiasteering rack has one or two variations. A section of the rack is connected to a cylinder with a piston in the centre, which has a fluid port on either side. Hydraulic fluid is provided to either side of the piston, which causes the Kiasteering rack to move, producing the power assisted steering.

Kia trivia

  • A deal with 20th Century Fox saw Kia build special editions of the Kia Sportage and Sorento. The tie-in was with the X-Men: Apocalypse movie, and while the Sportage resembles the shape-shifting character of Mystique, the Sorento looked incredible with it's Wolverine inspired claws.
  • Kia doesn't quite have a production facility on every continent (they don't have one in Australia), but they are present in 190 countries and have over 5000 dealerships.
  • Kia is currently part-owned by Hyundai, who owns just under 34% of the company. Lots of people think that the two companies are rivals!
  • The 2020 Kia Telluride SUV is the triple crown winner of the prestigious automotive awards, which includes the NACTOY Utility Vehicle of the Year, the MotorTrend SUV of the Year, and the Car & Driver 10Best. This is the first time that an SUV walked away with all three of the awards.
  • Talk about fast, the Hwasung manufacturing plant owned by Kia can knock out roughly 114 cars every hour. That works out as two cars every 60 seconds!
