About Glow Plugs

The Jaguar glow plug is used in a diesel engine instead of a spark plug. The primary function of a glow plug is to produce heat in order to help with the startup process in the engine. Unlike a petrol engine, the fuel that is injected into a diesel engine does not need a spark to ignite it. But when starting a diesel engine in cold conditions, some extra help is required, which is where the Jaguar glow plug comes into action.

Usually either platinum, iridium, or ceramic with an internal heating coil, a glow plug is a rod shaped heating element which can withstand extremes of high temperature. One end of the glow plug has a point which heats up, emitting a glowing light, when fed electricity. Glow plugs are normally installed in the cylinder head and are wired up to the car's battery.

The cylinders in the engine are heated up by the glow plugs before the engine is actually started, once the ignition has been turned to 'On' by the driver. In modern vehicles the glow plugs are usually automatically switched off by the glow plug relay when the desired heat has been reached to start the engine. Older vehicles require the driver to start the engine once given the go ahead by the indicator light on the dashboard, at which point the glow plugs switch off. If the engine is not started after a certain period of time, the glow plugs will be switched off automatically. If the engine is started prematurely this can cause damage to the glow plugs.

• Jaguar isn't a big name in F1, but they did have a go. They raced between 2000 and 2004 but didn't perform well enough to justify the costs. They managed a less than stellar ninth place in their final race.

Bulls don't get stretch marks, and they don't get bitten much by mosquitoes either. Belly and neck skin becomes the dash and door finish, while the backbone and the rump are used for the seats.
• Steve McQueen was a huge fan of the Jaguar XKSS and even found himself with two driving bans because of his passion for driving fast. He was one of the few people to ever drive an XKSS because only 16 were ever made! McQueen did eventually sell his car, but regretted it immediately and paid more to get it back. The car is now owned by US TV host Jay Leno.
• PM Margaret Thatcher was determined to keep Jaguar as a British company, and in 1984 she announced that the brand was protected from foreign purchasing. The government retained a 50% share of the company until it became clear that foreign investment was essential as 1990 rolled around.
• Jaguar was bought out by Ford in 1990, but they didn't really capitalise on the investment. Eventually, Ford sold Jaguar to the current owners, the Indian company Tata Motors.
