About Crankshaft Sensors

The Alfa Romeo crankshaft sensor is an important and clever electronic sensor which, along with the camshaft sensor, works in conjunction with the car's ECU, playing a crucial part in enabling the engine to run on time and smoothly.

The crankshaft sensor measures the speed that the crankshaft is rotating and sends this information to the ECU which uses it to determine and control the ignition and fuel injection timing of the engine, transmission changing and variable valve timing.

The crankshaft sensor is located underneath the bonnet at the front of the engine, usually on the crankshaft, the main crank pulley, the flywheel, or the camshaft. The crankshaft sensor is commonly replaced due to damage received in an accident or general wear and tear. Extremes of heat can cause the Alfa Romeo crankshaft sensor to burn out and damage from oil leaking into the sensor is also a factor that can lead to the sensor malfunctioning. If there is a problem with the crankshaft sensor the Check Engine light will illuminate on the dashboard.

If the engine is struggling with power; spluttering and stalling; having difficulty idling; or having issues with acceleration, it could be a broken crankshaft sensor. Often an initial indication that the crankshaft sensor has failed is an engine that won't start when it is hot but will start immediately when cold.  If the crankshaft sensor is not working properly and this is ignored, it could lead to fatal engine failure. There are many problems that can arise with your car's cooling system so it is advisable to consult with your mechanic to establish the exact cause of the fault. When this vital part fails, replacing it with the Alfa Romeo crankshaft sensor will guarantee complete compatibility with the make and model of your vehicle.

Alfa Romeo trivia

  • Due to tax shenanigans, the very first Alfa-branded car was named the 24HP, even though it came with a 25 horsepower 4.1-litre engine. It was quick and could do a satisfying 62mph, despite having wooden spoke wheels.
  • The Alfa Romeo logo has some really weird imagery. There are dashes of the Milanese coat of arms, and a terrifying picture of a snake eating a man. That image comes from the Visconti family crest, who used to rule Milan.
  • All car companies have a slogan, but Alfa Romeo never seemed happy with theirs. They have had several, with everything from ‘The family car that wins races’ to ‘Mediocrity is a sin’. In 2020, they’re sticking with ‘Beauty is not enough. Power for your control.’
  • There was a long period where Alfa Romeo simply stopped selling cars to the USA. Exports stopped in 1995 and didn’t resume again until 2015 when they launched the 4C sports car.
  • The history of Alfa Romeo has more than a touch of Ferrari in it. Enzo Ferrari himself was the man who ran the racing team of Alfa Romeo, and he did so for around a decade. That world-famous prancing pony logo was even seen on more than a few Alfa Romeo sports cars.
