Porsche 911 History

The first generation 911 (1963-89) Porsche 911 classic didn’t change too much over this 26 year period. The second generation (1989-93) was internally known as the 964 and gave the 911 a real change. It improved in many areas including aerodynamics and many mechanical areas. The third generation (1993-98) was internally known as the 993 and was the final 911 to use the air cooled engine. This again had a more aerodynamic design and some mechanical improvements. The fourth generation (1999-2005) was internally known as the 996, and was the first water cooled engine for the 911. This was the first version to use a different body shell from the original 911 design. The fifth generation (2005-11) was internally known as the 997 and had a similar design to its predecessor but going back to the ‘bug eye’ headlight design of the original 911. The sixth generation (2011-present) is internally known as the 991 and is the current version in production. This is built on a new platform, making it slightly larger and wider. This is the third design platform since the 911 was introduced.
