About Cross Members
The Vauxhall cross member is a structural part of the car body which holds the engine and/or transmission in place.
The Vauxhall cross member is more often than not made of steel, and usually contained within a box that is bolted across the underside of the car, to the bottom of the chassis.
The Vauxhall cross member forms part of the bodywork of the car and therefore is built to be strong and solid and able to withstand the weight of the engine and/or transmission. Being a structural part, the Vauxhall cross member assists with the overall handling of the car and helps to keep the body panels solidly in place and in the correct position.
It is vital that the Vauxhall cross member is in sound condition and working properly as it is paramount to the structural safety of the car. Prone to rust caused by water from the road and damaged caused by debris from the road, over time the Vauxhall cross member will eventually need replacing. If damaged the Vauxhall cross member will need replacing with one that is compatible with the make and model of your vehicle.
Vauxhall trivia
- The colour yellow that Vauxhall uses on its cars is named 'Maddox Yellow,' after pensioner Richard Maddox had his Corsa vandalised. Residents of the small village of Arlington where Maddox lived thought the car and the colour were ugly!
- The Vectra C is a very popular car, especially among the police force, and it's now common to see car buyers desperate to pick up an ex-police Vectra for cheap. It is estimated that Vauxhall manufactures as much as 70% of the UK police forces cars.
- The Vauxhall flagship vehicle is the Vauxhall Insignia. The family car has been in production since 2008 and was designed to replace the Vectra and the Signum. In the US, the Insignia is known by the rather grandiose name ‘Buick Regal’.
- It's the Corsa that is, by far, the most popular make produced by Vauxhall. Even as late as 2019, there were twice as many Corsa sales as there were of any other type of car.
- The Lotus Elise might seem like a far way away from the average Vauxhall, but they do have some matching parts. Alright, so it's nothing engine wise, but the Corsa does have the same indicator and wiper stalks that can be found on the Series 2 Lotus Elise.
