About Steering Pulleys
In order to reduce the effort required to steer a vehicle, most modern cars are fitted with a power assisted steering system. The system involves a variety of parts that work in conjunction to provide sufficient assistance to reduce the load on the driver when steering the car. This is especially useful when the vehicle is large and heavy and/or has oversized tyres.
One of the components that plays a part in the power steering system is the Saabsteering pulley. The Saabsteering pulley is normally made from solid steel and is round in shape. The essential part that it plays in the power steering system is to drive the power steering pump via a belt. There are two types of belt that a Saabsteering pulley is employed to drive. The first of these is a single V-type belt whilst the other is the serpentine belt, which is used to drive a range of different peripheral devices in a motor vehicle, including the power steering pump.
A Saabsteering pulley is usually sized to enable the power steering pump to operate at a speed faster than the engine.
The Saabsteering pulley will only need to be removed to replace it if it is damaged or to replace the power steering pump or a leaking pump seal.

- After the death of James Bond creator and writer Ian Fleming, the writer James Gardner took over writing duties for the super spy. He immediately had Bond driving a Saab 900 Turbo, and Saab even built a replica of the 'Silver Beast' which can still be seen in the Saab Car Museum.
- What does the word 'Saab' even mean? It's actually an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, Swedish Aircraft Company Limited. Saab is much easier to say.
- The world's first soft-top hybrid car was the Saab BioPower Hybrid Concept, and it premiered at the 2006 Stockholm Motor Show. The car ran off a combination of pure ethanol and electricity, and so is also the first hybrid to be 100% free of carbon emissions.
- Saab was the first company to use a wind tunnel to test their cars, but they didn't use a full-sized vehicle. Instead, they built a Saab 92 at 1:10 scale.
