About Replacement Wishbone Parts | Used, Second-Hand Wishbones
In a standard wishbone suspension there are two wishbone shaped metal arms (sometimes called A-Arms) per wheel. Each Rover wishbone is mounted to the chassis at two places using bushes or ball joints and to the knuckle in one place. The coil spring and damper is attached to the rear wishbone of the pair.
Their role is to precisely control the motion of the wheel during travel. Although they are sometimes called A-Arms, they can in fact also be L shaped or H shaped, with L shaped brackets preferred for passenger vehicles as the drive can be more comfortable and have good handling.
The Rover wishbones are configured slightly differently to front wishbones. Where two Rover wishbones are used on each wheel, in rear suspension you can have a pair of wishbones on each side of the wheel, meaning a total of four wishbones per wheel.
In the failure of a Rover wishbone you will notice a very loud rattle, vehicle vibration and lack of control over wheel positioning. Damage is more likely on ball joints where wishbones connect to the vehicle and can be caused by corrosion.
Rover trivia
- In 1952, noted car journalist, Bob Dearborn, famously wrote in his Road & Track review that, "… I honestly believe (barring the Rolls-Royce) that there is no finer car built in the world today."
- The Rover 200 and 400 series, commonly known as the R8 Rovers, are also called Wedges by owners, due to their unique shape.
- Corporate shenanigans changed the company a lot by the 70s, and Rover was owned by British Leyland.
- British Aerospace ended up buying the Rover brand in 1988. But they sold it off in 1994 to BMW, who formed MG Rover.
- During the 1960s, Rover was forced to cancel several promising car projects. That's because Rover became a corporate partner with Jaguar, and some of the projects they were working on were too similar! The Rover P8 was just one of the victims of this partnership and a prototype was never built.
