Lotus trivia
- There's a lot of mystery over why the name Lotus was chosen for the company. The most obvious answer is that it has something to do with the Lotus flower, but the connection to a UK car company is unclear. One of the best suggestions is that it relates to the Norfolk way of saying "...us lot", which was a favourite of the founder.
- Sports cars have low seating, and all Lotus vehicles have seating that is so low that the average driver often has issues with getting in and out. While there are many positives to driving a Lotus, even they recommend a test drive before committing to a purchase.
- The original Lotus cars were sold as kit cars so that buyers could avoid paying purchase tax. It wasn't until 1970 that Lotus started selling a model that didn't come as a kit...the Elan Plus Two.
- James Bond and Lotus go hand in hand. The Lotus Esprit S1 saw huge sales increases after being driven by Roger Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me. The actual car used in the film was lost for a few years before showing up in a locked storage unit. It was eventually sold at auction for £550,000.
- The Lotus Elise has been consistently voted as the best all-round sports car in the world, partly due to its lightweight design. It only weighs 1960lbs!
