About Top Ball Joints

The Kia top ball joint acts as a pivot between the wheels and the suspension and connects the upper control arm and the knuckle together with an upper control arm seal boot in the middle. Although there are front ball joints in vehicles, some high-performance vehicles also have rear ball joints.

The Kia top ball joint consists of a ball stud and bearing which sits inside a housing socket. Underneath the bottom side of the bearing is a rubber pressure ring. Lastly there is a grease fitting which acts as a guide for wear.

To inspect for damage of the Kia top ball joint you need to ensure that the vehicle is supported by the wheels. Ensure that the grease fitting is free of dirt and debris and then move a screwdriver or your fingernail across the cover. If the grease fitting is either flush or recessed into the cover the Kia top ball joint needs replacing.

Signs of failure include clicking, popping or snapping sounds when the wheel is turned. Failures of a ball joint are very serious and can cause the wheel’s angle to be incorrect.

Kia trivia

  • It wasn't until 1974 that Kia produced their first car. Before that, they focused on bicycles and motorbikes. By 1998, they had produced their one-millionth car! Kia were the company that produced South Korea's first-ever bicycle, first-ever motorbike, and first-ever domestic truck.
  • The concept car shown off by Kia in 2019 was an EV with some unusual features. The dashboard, in particular, was a shock to many as it featured 21 screens, each the size of the average smartphone.
  • The 2020 Kia Telluride SUV is the triple crown winner of the prestigious automotive awards, which includes the NACTOY Utility Vehicle of the Year, the MotorTrend SUV of the Year, and the Car & Driver 10Best. This is the first time that an SUV walked away with all three of the awards.
  • The first major commercial hit for Kia was The Pride. Not many people know that the design of the car was based on the Ford Festiva, with a few slight changes that made it easier for South Korea's drivers to get used to.
  • The name' Kia' isn't meaningless. It's actually a combination of two South Korean characters, and when put together the translation is either 'Coming from Asia' or 'Rising from the East', depending on who is doing the translation.
