About Speedometers

A vehicle’s Citroen speedometer is a gauge or meter that measures the speed of a motor vehicle. Is does this by measuring the speed at which the wheels are rotating and communicating this to the Citroen speedometer head, which then displays this as the vehicle’s speed.

There are two principal means by which the Citroen speedometer system communicates the necessary information to the Citroen speedometer head. The first of these is by way of a speedometer cable. This is a lengthy, flexible cable that comprises a collection of wires connected to the drive shaft, which turns as the wheels do. The rotation of the drive shaft causes the cable to turn which causes a magnet within a cup inside the speedometer head to turn. This causes currents that produce motion which, in turn, causes the Citroen speedometer dial to move and demonstrate the vehicle’s speed.

The second means of transmitting information to the Citroen speedometer head is electronically, by means of a Citroen speedometer transducer. The Citroen speedometer transducer is normally attached to the vehicle’s transmission and is an electronic pulse generator. It sends signals to the car’s computer as to how quickly the wheels are turning and this information is translated by the computer into the speed that is displayed by the Citroen speedometer.

In either type of Citroen speedometer system there are various components that are susceptible to failure but, fortunately, all of these are easily replaced.

Citroen trivia

  • If you went into a Citroën showroom in the 20s, there's a good chance that you would have been given a letter that was personally handwritten by Andre Citroën himself, proclaiming the benefits of the car models. This one act of marketing genius is credited with being responsible for thousands of closed sales.
  • Thanks to Citroën, the French driver Sebastien Loeb is the single most successful driver in the entire history of the World Rallying Championship. Nine consecutive driver's titles were won by Loeb in the time between 2004 and 2012, driving cars such as the Xsara, the C4, and the DS3.
  • John Lennon appeared in an advert for the Citroën DS3, many years after his death. The advert caused quite a lot of public criticism for Yoko Ono, who agreed to the musician's likeness being used.
  • Citroën cars have been put through their paces and all in the name of advertising. Citroën vehicles have trekked huge distances for promotional reasons, including expeditions across the Sahara, throughout Africa, all over Asia, and even across Alaska.
  • Buying Maserati was definitely a mistake for Citroën. The SM model didn't sell well, and that led to financial difficulties that meant the car company was eventually acquired by Peugeot.
