About Indicator Wiper Stalks

The Audi indicator wiper stalk is attached to the steering column via a multi-connecting plug, and is operated by the driver using a lever. When the lever is pushed, the wipers that are located on the indicators start moving in an arcing motion to clean dirt from the vehicle’s indicators with the aid of washing fluid from the washer system. The indicators wipers are powered by a motor consisting of a series of 4 bar linkages.

Problems with the Audi indicator wiper stalk can be caused through general wear and tear through consistent use. Many modern vehicles will display an error message or give warning if there is an issue with any element of the wiper system and it may be possible to diagnose the cause of stalk failure by using a circuit tester.

Other signs of Audi indicator wiper stalk failure could be noticed by a ‘loose’ lever when attempting to operate the indicator wipers, which can be caused by a broken stalk or signs of burn out on the electronic components. A failed Audi indicator wipe stalk may alternatively be too stiff to move easily which can cause the indicator wipers to stop functioning.

Audi trivia

  • Audi was the first manufacturer to use four-wheel drive cars in the World Rally Championship. Consistent wins meant that the WRC soon allowed all cars to use the technology.
  • The classic Audi ‘four-ring’ logo is instantly recognisable and is meant to symbolise the four companies that make up the main trading arms of Audi.
  • The Audi Type K was the first car with left-hand steering as standard. This was one of Audi’s most popular cars, especially in Germany.
  • The Audi R8 is made very unusually, and only 20 are rolled out of their factory on any given day. That’s because it's considered an honour to work on this model, and only the top 120 Audi employees are qualified enough.
  • Not happy with just making one of the first automated cars, Audi even built and raced one in the Pikes Peak Hill race, setting records for speed even without a driver.
