About Steering Column
One of the most important components in the steering system of any motor vehicle is the 1 SERIES BMWsteering column. The primary function of a car’s 1 SERIES BMWsteering column is to connect the steering wheel to the steering mechanism. This enables the steering system to translate the rotating movement of the steering wheel, as the driver steers the car, to the transverse movement of the vehicle’s wheels.
Although the operation of the steering system is the principle role of the 1 SERIES BMWsteering column it also has secondary functions, which include housing the 1 SERIES BMWsteering column electrical wiring, which is responsible for the operation of many of the vehicle’s accessories. The 1 SERIES BMWsteering column also hosts a variety of column switches, including those that are used to operate the windscreen wipers, the headlights, the horn, the direction indicators, the screen washers and, in higher range vehicles, the audio system, cruise control system and onboard computer.
Most modern vehicles also have a steering lock, which is housed within the 1 SERIES BMWsteering column and many vehicle models also have the facility to raise and lower the steering wheel, via a mechanism within the 1 SERIES BMWsteering column, to suit the height of individual drivers. Finally, certain steering columns, especially on older vehicles, also hold the gear shift control lever.
The 1 SERIES BMWsteering column is therefore a component with a variety of important functions.
BMW trivia
- Electric cars might be all the rage now, but BMW built their first one in 1972 and called it the BMW 1602e. It didn't quite make it to market though, thanks to the fact that it could only hold a twenty-minute charge.
- The BMW 3.0CSL was sold in the 70s and had the unusual addition of a spoiler that was kept in the boot. The owner could install it if they wanted to, but BMW couldn't sell the car with the spoiler attached because of road laws!
- Think you know what BMW is an acronym of? If you answered Broke My Wallet, you’re definitely wrong. It really stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (which is Bavarian Motor Works in English).
- Did you know that BMW built a Lamborghini? The two popular companies decided to make a race car together, but Lamborghini pulled out during the manufacturing process. BMW carried on, and the final result was the original BMW M1 supercar.
- The BMW company was founded way back in 1916 and originally manufactured engines for planes. High demand for plane engines during WWI was good news for BMW, but they carried on making plane engines right up until 1945.
