About Brake Servo Unit

The brake servo unit, if fitted, is an aid to the hydraulic braking system. With the operation of the servo unit less force is required on the brake pedal.

The servo unit is situated in the braking system and has a connecting rod that runs between the brake pedal, the master cylinder and fluid reservoir and is commonly found in the engine compartment.

The Zafira Vauxhall brake servo unit is a bulbous cylinder which contains a central diaphragm. On each side of the diaphragm there are two separate chambers The cylinder has a vacuum feed from the engine manifold this maintains a vacuum in both chambers. When the brake pedal is pressed an influx of external air is sucked into one side of the diaphragm, the air pressure rises as the vacuum is broken which pushes the diaphragm to assist the movement of the master cylinder which forces the hydraulic fluid through the piping to the slave cylinders on the brakes of each wheel. When the footbrake is released the vacuum is restored to the chamber.

Signs that there's a problem with the Zafira Vauxhall brake servo unit can be that the pedal becomes heavy and requires increased force to operate the brakes.

Vauxhall Zafira trivia

  • One of the members of pop band Hear' Say almost died in a Zafira! Danny Foster narrowly escaped injury when the car was engulfed in flames.
  • A turbocharged Zafira was unveiled in 2001 and was quickly recognised as the fastest minivan in Europe. The Zafira OPC could easily get from 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds.
  • There was a Zafira facelift in 2016, with new features including LED head and tail lights and stereo options. The front of the car was restyled, too, so that it more closely resembled the look of the Vauxhall Astra hatchback.
  • The Mk1 Zafira was the first MPV to have seven seats, although there was criticism over the space that passengers sitting in those two extra seats actually had. However, considering that the Mk1 was only an inch longer than the Vauxhall Astra estate, the fact that it could squeeze in an extra two seats remains impressive.
  • The Vauxhall Zafira was actually designed by Porsche back in 1994, and there's even a Zafira on display in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. The Zafira was produced as a concept car in '97 and finally went on sale in the UK in 1999.
