About Coil Pack

The Clio Renault coil pack is an essential part of the ignition of a vehicle. It consists of several coils in one fitting. Each coils role is to transfer the power from the vehicles 12volt battery in to a much higher voltage of thousands of volts to create the spark in spark plugs. They are then told when to fire by an on-board computer. These coils have some form of resistor in them, which limits the amount of power transmitted to the coils from the 12volt battery. This resistor can be an internal or external resistor or consist of a resistor wire. One coil pack is used for either one or two engine cylinders.

The downside of a Clio Renault coil pack is that if one of the individual coils in the pack goes, the whole pack needs to be replaced. Just one damaged coil can cause its adjoined engine cylinder to misfire. This may show on the dashboard as a ‘check engine’ light. Damage can be caused by worn spark plugs, which make the Clio Renault coil pack work harder to compensate, or faulty wiring or components. Clio Renault coil packs can also simply wear out through repeated use.

Renault Clio trivia

  • Worldwide, there have been more than 12 million Clios sold, with the UK market making up around 1.2 million of those.
  • If you bought a brand new Renault Clio when it was first released, it would only have set you back £7,190!
  • The most famous and popular Clio is the Renault Clio Williams. This was a custom-built Clio that was designed and built to celebrate the Williams F1 World Championship wins.
  • French footballer Thierry Henry was the face of Renault for two different Clios. The sports star was brought in for the ‘va va voom’ campaign to try and help market the Clio to men. A shift in buying demographics did happen, and the car became a lot more popular among male drivers.
  • The Renault Clio is responsible for one of the most famous car adverts in the world. The Papa and Nicole adverts became iconic, and the actress who played Nicole was once voted more recognisable than Bob Hoskins, tv-presenter Chris Evans, and the then PM, John Major. The finale of the advert run featured Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer!
