Renault Clio trivia

  • 2002 was the year that the Clio saw its highest sales figure. That year alone saw 86,337 Clios bought in the UK.
  • Released partway through 1991, there was still an impressive 21,123 Clios sold in the UK. The following year, after a full year of sales, 34,701 Clios were sold.
  • Before the Clio, Renault had always struggled in the UK car market. The release of the Clio changed all that, partly because the Twingo wasn’t made available in Britain.
  • The Clio III, which was the first of the third-generation models to be released, was the first of the supermini class to receive a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating. It was also the first Clio to feature a card to start the car rather than a key.
  • The Renault Clio is responsible for one of the most famous car adverts in the world. The Papa and Nicole adverts became iconic, and the actress who played Nicole was once voted more recognisable than Bob Hoskins, tv-presenter Chris Evans, and the then PM, John Major. The finale of the advert run featured Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer!
