About Wheel Bearing
A Focus Ford wheel bearing is an essential component of the car’s hub assembly and is responsible for the smooth rotation of the wheel on its axle.
Most modern cars use sealed bearings consisting of an inner, central and outer race housing 2 sets of bearings (inner and outer). They are lubricated with high temperature grease and sealed to prevent the ingress of moisture and debris.
The sealed bearing unit is pressed into the centre of the hub assembly.
There are generally 2 types of wheel bearing, roller for driven wheels and race or tapered for non-driven wheels.
Due to the high levels of friction and movement the wheel bearing is prone to wear. This is especially likely when water or debris enters the unit. While sealed bearings are maintenance free older style bearings should be regularly greased to prolong life.
Worn bearings should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent additional wear to other components of the vehicle including tyres, hub assembly and suspension.
Ford Focus trivia
- The first Focus World Rally Car was entered into the 1999 Monte Carlo Rally, with Colin McRae and Simon Jean-Joseph behind the wheel of two specially designed cars. Unfortunately, the Focus was found to have a water pump that was not allowed, and the Focus team was excluded from the event (although they returned for the Safari Rally later that year and won).
- Between its launch in 1998 and now, an estimated 12 million people own a Ford Focus.
- The original name for the Ford Focus was the Ford Fusion. It was only when the car went into production that the name change to Focus was confirmed, although Ford has used the Fusion name since then for a different model.
- Although the original version of classic Brit cop show The Sweeney had detectives racing around in a Ford sedan, the 2012 remake saw an upgrade to the 2012 Ford Focus ST hatch. "Get your trousers on, you're nicked."
- Ken Block, an impressive five-time medal winner at the X-Games, as well as being a rally racer, helped Ford to develop the 2016 Ford Focus RS.
